In anticipation of a potential government shutdown, the SSA outlined a contingency plan for how operations would occur. Importantly, a large majority of SSA functions are considered critical, so only certain functions would be impacted.
In the event of a government shutdown, the relevant halted SSA activities would be (not exhaustive):
· Benefit verifications
· Earning record corrections
· Third-party request queries
· FOIA requests
· Replacement Medicare cards
· Overpayment processing
· Quality control review
· Responding to Congressional inquiries on appeals
If the shutdown were to become lengthy, their plan could change. IBI will continue to monitor these updates.
